There’s nothing like watching a good documentary. A good documentary will get you thinking about your world differently. Here’s five films I recommend you add to your queque. They all (with the exception of Paddle to Seattle) can be streamed directly through Netflix.
1. Man on Wire- Just an amazing all around film. This is the story of Phillippe Petit, the famous high wire walker who walked across a cable he rigged between the Twin Towers of the Trade Center.
2. Paddle to Seattle- The story of two adventurers who build their own kayaks and embark on a 1200 mile journey by water from Alaska to Seattle. Breathtaking footage and hilarious commentary bring this remarkable story to life.
3. Food Inc.- A documentary about the sad state of food production and food manufacturing in the United States. This one is quite the eye-opener. I’d highly recommend you watch it.
4. 180° South- In 1968 Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia founder) and Doug Tompkins (Northface founder) took off an amazing journey to explore Patagonia, South America. In 2007 a group of adventure-seeking surfer-mountaineers retrace their footsteps to this beautiful and remote part of the world. Like Paddle to Seattle, 180° South features some breathtaking landscapes.
5. Blindsight- Eric Weihenmayer, the first blind man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, leads a group of six Tibetan teenagers on a journey to summit Lhakpa Ri, a 23,000 foot peak on the North side of Mt. Everest. An emotionally-moving examination of these children’s lives and the challenges they’ve had to overcome. Well worth watching.
So that’s it. I’d be curious to hear what your experience is with one or more of these films. And if you’ve seen any documentaries lately that you’d recommend, please let me know. I’m looking for the next one.
